Impressive volcanos, a pristine lagoon and villages in which the time seems to stand still – this is what you can find in the Andean region not far from Arica. It is a beautiful area that is easily accessible from the village of Putre.

The lake Chungara has a surface of 21,5 km² and provides an ideal setting for recreative activities like observation of nature and a wonderful topography.

The highland and summits are a contrast to the lake, which is only 33m deep. However, this singular environment creates a habitat for numerous species like the alpaca, vizcachas, guanacos, pumas, llamas and foxes.

Another characteristic of the area is the unique bird population. Especially famous are the Chilean flamingos, the Andean ostrich, the Andean goose, the condor, the giant duck, among other endemic species.

The flora around Lake Cungara consists mainly of wetland, and in combination with the endemic fauna full of camel species and varied avifauna nature creates a beautiful spectacle for every visitor. The Andean region opens its doors so that travelers can enjoy the fascinating natural environment through hiking, climbing, adventure tourism, ecotourism, photo safaris and much more.

In addition, different cultural attractions can be found in the area that are connected with the Aymara culture. You can find this culture in the architecture of the ancient villages or in the traditional celebrations and festivals of the local population.

It is for all these reasons that you should not miss out on the beautiful Lake Chungara, the highest non-shippable lake in the world. Located at 4.500 meters above sea level, where wetlands grow around the lagoons of Cotacotani, you can observe how the flora and fauna wakes up early in the morning. In the waters of the lagoon you will see the reflection of the Nevados Payachatas, consisting of the two volcanos Pomerape and Parinacota which reach a height of over 6.500m over sea level, giving you an idea of the spectacular scenery that awaits you at the Lake Chungara.
