North of Chile, The Lake Chungara

The Lake Chungara is located in the province of Parinacota, region of Arica and Parinacota, Chile. It is one of the highest lakes in the world located at an altitude of 4.517m over sea level. The lake is surrounded by several volcanos like the Nevados of Payachatas (volcanos Parinacota and Pomerape), the Nevado Sajama and the Guallatiri.

The Lake Chungara sits alongside the route Arica - Chungara – Bolivia, connecting the city of Arica with La Paz via the border control of Tambo Quemado. Laying in the middle of the National Park Lauca, the lake is located 54 kilometers east of Putre and only 9 kilometers west of the international border to Bolivia. Around the lake you will find typical wetland and the lagoons of Cotacotani. The fauna in this area is unique and consist of more than 130 native species, especially flamingos and ducks.
